Find out how solar panels, reed beds, recycled materials, and woodland planting all contribute to our low-impact, eco-conscious approach.
Sustainability isn’t just a buzzword at Yorkshire Dales Meat Company it’s part of how we work, every single day.
From the land we farm to the facilities we run, we’re always looking for smart, practical ways to reduce our environmental footprint while continuing to produce top-quality meat. Some changes are small. Others are more ambitious. But together, they’re helping us build a better, cleaner, and more responsible business naturally.
In this blog, we’ll walk you through the real steps we’ve taken to cut emissions, manage resources, and care for the land that sustains us.
Powering Up: Renewable Energy on the Farm
We’ve invested in a 100kWp roof-mounted solar photovoltaic system on-site. It generates clean, renewable electricity to help power our cutting plant and operations.
The impact?
- 28.9 tonnes of carbon offset annually
- Reduced reliance on fossil fuels
- A more sustainable energy source for day-to-day processing
It’s a big win for both the environment and the long-term viability of the business.
Natural Water, Naturally Treated
Water is essential in food production, but it needs to be used wisely. That’s why we’ve developed a closed-loop system that works with nature:
- Factory water comes from an underground on-site borehole, reducing pressure on local mains systems
- Waste water is treated through a reed bed filtration system, which uses plants and natural processes to clean the water before it leaves the farm
This system requires no chemicals, uses no external processing plants, and supports wildlife in the process.
Recycling Everything We Can – In a busy meat production environment, there’s always packaging and by-products to manage, but we’ve taken serious steps to minimise waste and maximise recycling.
Here’s what we do:
- All cardboard, glass, and metal is sorted and recycled
- We avoid single-use plastics wherever possible in our packaging
- Deliveries are made in returnable trays
The result? A cleaner operation, less landfill, and a leaner impact overall.
Sourcing Smart: Using What We Have – During the construction of our cutting plant, we used gravel from our own land, not imported or bought in, but literally dug from the ground beneath our feet.
It’s a simple thing, but it speaks to a larger point: we use what we’ve got. Whether that’s materials, knowledge, or local suppliers, we believe sustainability starts at home.
Rewilding and Woodland Planting – We’re farmers, but we’re also stewards of the land. And part of that responsibility means giving space back to nature.
That’s why we’ve planted a 2.5-acre broadleaf woodland on the farm. It’s already providing:
- Habitat for birds, insects, and small mammals
- Natural windbreaks and shade for livestock
- Carbon sequestration that will increase year on year
Combined with our thriving hedgerows, 3000m planted in 2025, we are making Mill Close Farm greener, wilder, and more balanced.
What It All Adds Up To
Here’s a quick snapshot of what our environmental work is currently achieving:
| Initiative | Environmental Benefit |
| Solar power | 28.9 tonnes of CO₂ saved per year |
| Reed bed system | Natural, chemical-free wastewater treatment |
| Borehole water | Reduced demand on local water infrastructure |
| Woodland planting | Carbon capture, wildlife habitat, improved soil health |
| Material recycling | Waste diverted from landfill |
And this isn’t the end, we’re constantly reviewing and improving what we do. Sustainability isn’t about doing one thing perfectly. It’s about doing many things consistently well.
